Jim Taylor is the Managing Director of Brisbane Unique Homes. He is a certified Queensland Master Builder and personally supervises the construction of every new home built by the company.
Jim’s been building custom designed luxury homes for almost 40 years during which time he’s completed literally hundreds of spectacular, innovative homes for his discerning clients.
“It’s a family tradition,” he says, “My grandfather was a builder in Charters Towers for many years before moving his family to Brisbane. He passed on much of his extensive woodworking and carpentry knowledge to my father. Growing up, I helped my father from time to time. He was a very astute businessman from whom I gained a wealth of experience and good advice. Some years later I inherited many of my grandfather’s original hand tools which I will always value immensely. I guess you could say building is in the family’s genes.”
Like most Brisbane teenagers in the 1970s, Jim was attracted to the Gold Coast’s beaches and surfing culture. The Coast was an exciting place back then and developing quickly, so when the time was right it was a natural progression for him to start his own Gold Coast building company.
The intervening years have not diminished his love of exercise and the outdoor lifestyle. He and his family have had a long association with the Mermaid Beach Surf Club and at weekends they can often be found catching up with friends and old mates at the club. They are also keen skiers, so when time allows the luxury of a short break, the ski slopes make for an enjoyable change of scenery.
Being a relatively low-volume builder and concentrating on the luxury end of the market allows us to take a personal interest in every home we build. Our company’s vision has always been to be the first choice among discerning homeowners. In fact, many of the custom homes we’ve built have been on the personal recommendations of friends and business associates who’ve also engaged our services.
Unlike most builders who offer a standard range of floor plans, Jim geared the business to delivering Brisbane luxury homes that stand out from the crowd. These days, the company builds homes across a wide range of styles throughout South East Queensland; from luxury waterfront residences to spacious acreage homes and stunning town homes. More recently, we’ve extended the range to include luxury duplexes and dual living homes.
Construction Manager, Jack Marjanovic joined Unique Homes in 2013, bringing over 40 years of building industry experience to the company. He had previously been employed as a project manager and supervisor for a number of high profile Gold Coast construction companies.
His extensive experience and commitment to client service enable him to effectively ensure that the build process is efficiently managed to deliver on-time, on-budget home handovers.
Should problems arise during the build process, his in-depth knowledge of all aspects of the latest construction methods, trades and technologies, combined with his outstanding supervisory and leadership skills facilitates the speedy resolution of issues that would otherwise impeded the company’s ability to meet building deadlines.
Jack also has a keen interest in hockey, playing competitively for several years with Queensland’s successful veterans’ hockey team. He was an international hockey umpire at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics and has since umpired several World Cups and International Champions Trophy matches.
Chris Garfoot joined Unique Homes in 2005 as the company’s in-house building design manager. In this role, he liaises closely with clients to deliver custom design concepts and final building plans for the company’s prestigious luxury family homes.
Chris holds Bachelor of Architecture and Bachelor of Built Environment degrees and prior to joining Unique Homes worked on several high profile Gold Coast projects, including Bond University.
Since joining the company he has designed dozens of unique and stunning custom built luxury homes for clients, in locations from Brisbane through to the Gold Coast and into Northern NSW.
His award-winning designs for the company’s display homes have received industry accolades for their innovation, practicality and environmental sensitivity.
Jo Van Rooijen joined Unique Homes in 2016 as the company’s new home consultant. In this role, she liaises closely with clients to develop their custom design concepts into prestigious luxury family homes. Working closely with the company’s experienced in-house design team Jo brings many years of building industry expertise to the company. Prior to working in new home sales, Jo had over 15 years of experience selling residential real estate. Her book, ‘Selling Your Property: How to get the best price in any market’, is available from the Unique Homes sales office.
Ruth Franks joined Unique Homes in 2014 as the company’s Contracts Administrator, which saw her overseeing all builds through from signing the initial contract through to final hand-over to the homeowners. Since promoted to Administration Manager, her role now includes assisting the Director on a day to day basis, as well as running the Burleigh Heads Office, with an efficient team of administration staff. Her responsibilities encompass regular liaison with clients, suppliers, financing bodies, building certifiers and local government agencies.
Ruth has almost 30 years of experience in the residential construction industry. She is a Commissioner of Declarations and holds a Certificate IV in Workplace Health & Safety.
Jannine Cook joined Unique Homes in 2014 as the company’s Accounts Manager. She is responsible for the preparation of contract documents and all aspects relating to client account management, creditor payments and payroll administration. She also has extensive experience in forward planning and budgeting.
Jannine holds a Certificate IV in Bookkeeping and has over 20 years of experience within the residential building and construction industry.
Rob Watts joined Unique Homes in 2017 as the company’s Estimator. Rob has an extensive background in the building and construction industry with over 15 years’ experience as an industry estimator.
His responsibilities include the preparation of all costings associated with the construction of clients’ new homes, obtaining sub-contractor quotations, preparing bills of quantities, preparing client variations and sourcing new products from an ever changing marketplace for inclusion in new builds.
As required, Rob also provides clients with advice regarding the selection of internal fixtures and fittings and the suitability and selection of building products used in construction.
